Interview : 10mins With Zakaria Messaoudi

"Yours truly" (FimTvBlog) meet up with Zack and we had a 10 mins chat with this music artist and guitarist from Netherlands .
Can we get to know you?- Yes! Well, I’m Messa. My real name is Zakaria, or Zak, if you will. I’m a 22-year-old musician who lives in the Netherlands. I basically make rock music as a one-man band, but I’m a guitarist at heart.

When and why did you start playing?

- I started playing when i was about 11 years old, It’s kind of funny why i started playing; at that age i was playing video games and also got into music games, like guitar hero.

There was this one game that taught you how chords work and stuff, so that’s where i really wanted to start playing music. I asked my parents for a cheap acoustic guitar, i watched a ton of lessons on the internet, and off i went!

Which instruments do you play and What was the first tune(s) you learned?

- I play guitar and bass mostly. I have some knowledge in playing keys and drums, but i’m better off programming them on the computer. One of the first tunes i tried to learn was Santeria by Sublime. Still love that song.

Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?

- As of now, I’ve really gotten into musicians like Chon, Polyphia, Animals as Leaders, and so forth. Their style of writing riffs that are so original yet so enjoyable really gets my attention.

What are your fondest musical memories, In your house, In your neighbourhood or town?
- That would be joining one of my first bands, called 24/7 Junction at the time. Those guys were so nice, and we hit it off so well, both musically and socially. I really think back to that positively.

Were you influenced by old records & tapes? Which ones?

- Interestingly, lots of pop-punk. Two records that come to mind are Does This Look Infected by sum 41 and Take Off Your Pants and Jacket by blink 182. I’m really into all kinds of music, though.

Have you been in competitions? Any prizes?

- I’ve been in multiple small band competitions locally, no prizes sadly, but to be fair I care more for a good show than any trophy or such.

Do you get nervous before a performance?

- When I first started preforming, yes, I would get nervous. But nowadays not so much anymore.

What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous?

- Well, I have three important tips that I really hold onto.

1. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Trust me, you’ll feel a lot more calm and focussed if you know your part very well. Also practice with the whole band. Practice the whole show how you’re going to play it, talk to your band mates about when you want to do small breaks between songs, and make sure you communicate well.

2. Make sure you can hear yourself properly while playing, especially if you make loud rock music. Make sure your monitors are loud enough when you soundcheck.

3. If you’re naturally a shy person, here’s what I’d do: look OVER your crowd, not at them. Say there’s a wall at the back of the room you’re playing at, look at a point on that wall. It will look like you’re looking at the audience, but you won’t have to make eye contact.

What do you practice - exercises, new tunes, hard tunes, etc.?

- Lately, I mostly practice certain techniques on their own and try to incorporate them into my own music. I don’t really practice other people’s songs anymore unless I really like the song, or I plan on covering it.
