We have got it wrong. Any organization that does not reward hard work and integrity does not survive.
Ours appear to punish both hard work and integrity. Let me illustrate.
I recall the last LGA elections in Warri. As a party just doing it for the first time there was no support from any quarter except individual grassroots effects.
I recall purchasing forms for several candidates, obtaining tax clearance for others because of my belief that tomorrow will be organized.
That tomorrow has come and it is going even though on election day a few of us stood
resolute and fought for the party to the point of risking our lives, not even an oral appreciation of the efforts was done. We even had several attempts on our lives, reported and successfully prosecuted at least one of the cases.
I recall the despicable looks on the faces of party faithfuls on the eve of the election which prompted me to dig deep again into my pocket to lead a donation for logistics for the election.
I feel satisfied that I brought joy to the heart of many and gave some sort of hope that day.
I went ahead to secure press coverage from both electronic, mainstream and social media, held press conferences with my LGA Chairman, Val Egbe by my side all the while.
More than two years after the same scenario now presents itself.
As a reasonable man who has not been appreciated for once but was depised for all these, I will sit down and look which I should have done then at least my money would have been used for something else. Guess many would learn from my experience.
You don't cheat a man twice under the same circumstances and expect the man to continue to present himself for another round.
I know many who will not also move. It's all about treating people poorly which is the only thing we have in surplus supplies.
This is where we got it wrong.
We don't appreciate that by contesting this important grassroots elections we renew our presence in the minds of the electorate. I hear the leaders say it is an Okowa election. What an epileptic submission.
We need a rethink!
