WHAT'S IN A NAME? - Emcee Dawan

I facilitated a corporate event recently and I had the honour of introducing Chris Ohwo; a trade, sales and marketing expert as one of the speakers.

When I handed over the microphone to him, he remarked that he had never seen anyone who pronounced his name so well. In fact you could see the surprise and elation on his face as evidenced in this picture.

What am I trying to say?

I see many masters of ceremonies these days murder peoples names and surnames then give the excuse that they are not from the same tribe or ethnic group as the person hence their inability to pronounce the name correctly.

Truth is, as a master of ceremonies, it is your job to get the correct pronunciation of any names you would be calling at an event. If you like be an Urhobo person and find yourself saddled with the responsibility of pronouncing an Efik name.
You must do it and do it well.

I have discovered that the easiest way to offend guests and speakers at any occasion is to pronounce their name wrongly, which is why when I meet with clients before the event, I ask for the pronunciations of all the names I would be calling on the day of the event.

According to Dale Carnegie, a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
Don't sour up the sweetness of a person's name by bastardizing the pronunciation.
