On his arrival, he was warmly welcomed by the Rector Dr J.S Obureh, Registrar Mr S.O Onaikan and members of the governing council including the chairman of the board Hon. Funkekeme Solomon. The essence on this visit is to ascertain the reality of developments and challenges facing the various institutions of the state.
The institution which is about 14 years old has seen tangible development particularly during this present tenure of Dr Jacob Obureh.
The rector enumerated that a total of 62 structures have been constructed by his administration in which the source of fund is internally generated revenue and through direct labour involving staff and students executing projects from start to finish in the institution so as to cut cost.
Hon. Bar Daniel Mayuku and his team were taken round the institution to see the various achievements of his administration.
The stadium built solely from the resource of the institution is rated as the best in the state and its foundation was laid only in July 2015 .The ridiculously low budget spent on the project is what baffles everyone.
The rector also admitted that the Governor of Delta state, HE Senator Ifeanyi Okowa saw the stadium complex and promised N100M for speedy completion which he fulfilled in a week.
Also observed was a 2 km road network which is being executed by the institutions internal labour.
The rector also demolished remains of the outdated structures (former College of Agriculture) facing the highway and replacing them with befitting ones suitable for a higher institution.
The institution can also boast of a world class ICT center with about 350 computers.
CHALLENGES
However, the Rector sighted some challenges currently facing the institution
1. Acute shortage of staff.
A total of 132 staff have exited the institution over the years without replacement and this is placing a huge burden on the schools internal wage bill tagged at about 14 million monthly to pay part time staff/lecturers in preparation for periodic accreditation. He pleaded with the State Governor to employ more staff to replace the exited ones.
2. Insufficient cash to do the accreditation.
He stressed ”we shall continue to strive and work diligently to become famous in creative research and produce ground- breaking research output which has eluded many polytechnics and universities in the country.”
This rector is a developer and a “magician” even in the face of harsh economic reality.
