The eight types of normal nipples

Experts have identified 8 different nipple types.

So now that we all know our breast shape and which country has the largest boobs, it's time to cross the final inside-the-brassiere-frontier by determining which of the eight identified nipple shapes we have.

Seventeen magazine interviewed Dr Tsippora Shainhouse, a clinical instructor at the University of California on the issue of nipple shape and the good doctor provided the magazine with a list of the most commonly found shapes, all of which are normal.

Those of us with breasts will probably fall into a single category but more than one is possible too, Dr Shainhouse says.

Here are the categories as reported by Seventeen:

PROTRUDING

Think of nipples that rise a few millimetres above the skin's surface. They often point downwards and harden when exposed to cold or when the owner is aroused.

FLAT
These nipples lie completely flat against the skin and blend with the areola. Also become erect when cold or stimulated.

PUFFY

The whole nipple is raised but can become more so when exposed to cold or stimulated.

INVERTED

Severity of inversion differs considerably. Often the nipple can be tugged outwards unless the muscles behind it are too tight.

UNILATERAL INVERTED
When one nipple protrudes but the other goes inwards, or retracts. Neither is a cause for worry unless it starts to happen when it has not done so before.

BUMPY

Most of us have glands around the areola called Montgomery glands, but some people have much bumpier ones than the rest of us.

HAIRY

Some women are hairier than others and it is not abnormal to have dark hairs growing out of areola. They are safe to tweeze out.

SUPERNUMERARY
Look carefully - you might have a third nipple that you have always thought was a mole or other bump. Usually they are found under the breasts or on the torso.
