South Carolina Governor signs legislation that bans abortion after 19 weeks

South Carolina has become the latest state in the United States to ban abortion. Republican Gov. Nikki Haley signed the legislation yesterday and the law outlaws all abortions at 20 weeks beyond fertilization unless the mother's life is in jeopardy or a doctor determines the fetus can't survive outside the womb.

Like most similar laws, it contains no exceptions for rape or incest. According to the Bill sponser, Republican Wendy Nanney, she is hopeful the law is a step to eventually get rid of abortion altogether.

Doctors now face up to $10,000 in fines and three years in prison if they are found carrying out an abortion illegally.
